Monday morning on my drive to work I contemplated the need to re-examine my list of podcasts. I’m not one of those people who can listen to people talking and still concentrate on other work, so my podcast listening time is at a premium. Lately I’ve been hearing podcast bumpers for some interesting, funny radio dramas and I added the Yog-Sothoth podcast to my lineup. That meant something else would to have to go. As went down my mental list, two possibilities came to mind. Slice of Sci-Fi is fun, informative show. It’s also where I learned about Charlie Jade. Unfortunately, it’s just too darn long and comes out too frequently for my listening habits. Then there’s Geek Fu Action Grip. It had a good run and the serialized audiobook was entertaining, but it felt like it was becoming more about the cult of personality around its host. I’m sure it’s fun if you’re into that, but I just don’t have the time. So there were my two candidates. I resolved that I would unsubscribe from both the next time I opened iTunes.

At work I opened my RSS feed reader (I use Google Reader) to skim through the morning blog report, and that’s when I discovered that Geek Fu was dumping me. Here I’d just resolved to break up with her, and she turns around and breaks up with me first! Oh the irony! Sure, she says it’s not me. It’s her. She’s burnt out. We’ve been having trouble for a while and she just didn’t want to admit it. Well, it’s probably for the best that it’s over. Now we can both move on with our lives.

I’m pleased to say that I got an e-mail this morning letting me know that they posted the interview last night. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I remember it as a great conversation. Check it out and tell me what you think. It’s kind of cool that I’m on the same roster of interviewees as Terry Moore, Mira Furlan, and Joe Kubert.

In his podcast Comicology, Neil Gorman reviews comics that he thinks are especially noteworthy and gives in-depth profiles of certain comics or characters. I really enjoy formats, mostly because I don’t regularly buy comics anymore. I’ve got two kids in daycare, and that eats up the majority of my “disposable” income. Anyway, particularly enjoy Neil’s character profiles, because he’ll take a character like Nick Fury or the Martian Manhunter and give you the whole crazy history starting 40+ years ago. He’ll explain character “resets”, continuity jumps, the whole deal. For characters that go back as far as the golden age, like the Green Lantern, that makes for particularly interesting listening. I also appreciate that his shows usually only run between 20 and 30 minutes. He’s respectful of my time, and every show he makes a point of acknowledging that there are a lot of listening options out there and thanking us for choosing to listen to him. I compare this to other shows I listen to, which continue to experience time bloat, and I know I’ll always make time for Comicology. It’s a show that others have spoken of highly

Yesterday, out of the blue, I got an IM from Neil. It began with “Hey Preston. Do you still listen to Comicology?” I should say that Neil and I aren’t “tight” or anything. I’ve posted a couple times on his forum and I think I IM’d him once before when he asked for feedback about a show format. However, for all practical purposes we’re strangers. I assured him that I still listen but that I’m an episode or two behind. Neil went on to admit that that his download numbers have dropped off and he’s trying to figure out why.

I assured him that I had no intention of dropping his feed and offered to plug his show here on my blog. If you listen to podcasts, or if you don’t but you’re interested in comics, I’d like to encourage you to check out Comicology. Neil is respectful of your time, always accessible to his listeners, knowledgable about his stubject, and–most importantly–I almost always learn something new or cool from his show. Give Comicology a try.

I just got off the phone with Working Man from Fist Full of Comics and Games. We had a great conversation and I think it’ll come across as a good interview. He asked intelligent, leading questions that helped me keep from rambling… too much, anyway. I also recorded bumpers for them and Does My Geek…, so I’m looking forward to hearing those floating around for a while. I’m not sure when the interview will hit the feed, but I’ll let everyone know when it’s out.
