Somehow one of my e-mail addresses ended up on a spam list for AMAZING MONEY MAKING OPPORTUNITIES. Now almost daily I’m told that Generating CASH Should Be This Easy!!! The other day I accidentally opened one and I finally figured out what these offers are really about. Prostitution! Let’s break it down.

Get Paid Instantly Working at Home!

Well duh! How many prostitutes take rain checks? Anyway, it sounds better than Get Paid Instantly Working Behind a Dumpster!

Now you can receive thousands of dollars per week (in cash) right to your door.

While it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that prostitutes were taking credit cards these days, I think my theory still holds up. I’d think you have to develop a high-end clientel to pull in that kind of dough, though.

With this program there are:
* NO products or inventory to keep track of

Exactly!

* N0 selling to friends and family

Because that would just be weird.

* NO explaining or talking to anyone

Because that’s what a pimp is for.

* NO monthly quotas to meet

Just nightly ones.

* NO uplines or downlines

Another sign of getting old is losing track of all the uphanisms. I’m not sure what it means to do an upline or downline, but I’m sure someone out there feels reassured knowing that they don’t have to do it.

* NO convincing people to join

Again, that’s the pimp’s job.

* NO 3-way calls to advisors or sponsors

This one took some consideration, but I’d hazard a guess that it’s because they text one another instead.

* NO STRESS

That’s a hard thing to guarantee.

* NO B. S.

Except for this e-mail.

Incidentally, I’ve probably just killed my search rankings by including all this spam lingo on my blog. The things I do for you…

Several years ago I heard author David Wolfe speak at a marketing convention about how people in different stages of their lives have different "hot buttons" with regard to marketing. Furthermore, he postulated that the "hot button" values of the majority are subconsciously inherited by the minority. He talked about the maturation of humans throughout their lives and how examining age demographics will give us clues to market sentiment. This is a guy who has spent a lot of time studying both psychology, demographics, and marketing. When he reminds us that 20 years ago he predicted the current falling housing market, it’s time to sit up and listen to what else he has to say about age-related demographic forces on the economy.

David has started a new series on his blog about the impact the aging baby boomers will have on our economy. It doesn’t matter if you’re not an economist or marketing person–the two articles up so far are easy enough for anyone to follow. To sum up his message thus far, he points out that in America, spending tends to peak at about age 48 and steadily decreases all the way to and through retirement. Baby boomers, who have been such an economic force in our country for the last few decades, are in a life phase in which they are spending steadily less. What does that mean for our economy? I’m looking forward to reading David’s essays to find out.

Welcome to yet another episode of Flametoad’s “Seen on the Net”. Today we (that’s the imperial “we”, for those of you watching at home) bring you a pair of videos from Clip a Day.

First, a clever Adidas marketing stunt pays off. Two athletes (at least, you hope they’re athletes) are suspended from a billboard and play soccer in mid-air. As a marketing guy, I’d like to know the logistics behind this one. How long were the guys up there? Were fresh athletes rotated in periodically? How long could a person be expected to jump around (sideways) on a harness? If someone tried that in the US they’d probably be slapped with various OSHA lawsuits. Or an careless driver would sue Adidas for his fender-bender.

Next, you’ll want to see this clip of a helicopter picking up a boatload of Navy Seals. While the overall maneuver impresses me, mostly I’m blown away by the skill of the helicopter pilot. I don’t want to spoil it, but let’s just say that compensating for the extra weight taken on by the chopper isn’t something for a novice pilot.

My interview on The Writing Show was released today. I just finished listening to it, so here are my first impressions.

Man I sound like a dork.

Wow! I don’t remember saying that. I’m smarter than I thought.

That was “in a nutshell”? Just shut the heck up already!

God… I talk like William Shatner!

My deepest regret is not mentioning my partners by name. Ed, Jerry, TC, and Trey all deserve recognition.

I know I said things with which not all people will agree, and I probably said some things that’ll turn out to be inaccurate. That’s the nature of interviews and having to come up with answers on the fly. If there’s a next time (and I hope there is), I’ll be better with practice.

First, as mentioned last night during gaming, I’d advise you to give careful consideration before registering a domain name. For instance, the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales, probably should have reconsidered www.molestationnursery.com. For more ill-conceived domain names, visit Highmoon.

I started watching Rocketboom maybe a month before I even got my iPod, and I continued to watch it for a few months thereafter. It was a nice mixture of quirky, geeky news delivered by an attractive, geeky-girl-next-door host. However, I eventually unsubscribed because it was getting political more and more often and that just wasn’t what I’d found engaging about the show. So I was a bit surprised when I stumbled across the news today that Rocketboom’s attractive host, Amanda Congdon, is no longer with the show. One google search later led me to the dirt on the splitup. Rocketboom’s producer is apparently still driving the show with a new anchor, so presumably the content won’t be changing. Thus, I still won’t be watching.

Edit: And in advertising news, clothing store American Apparel has opened a virtual store in Second Life. Second Life is a virtual world similar to a MMORG like (World of Warcraft), except instead of combat and adventure it’s about creating an idealized version of the world we live in. In the AA’s virtual store, your avatar can walk around and try on or buy clothes (for about $1). Or apparently your Avatar purchase clothes for the real you. I’m guessing you conduct the transaction online and the clothes are shipped to you. This is another one of those quiet landmarks. A name-brand brick and morter business is 1) establishing a brand presence in a vitual world, 2) selling virtual items, and 3) selling real life items through a Second Life storefront. Smart move. (Follow the first link in this paragraph for screenshots.)

Before you hit play, be aware that this is NSFW. The following is a condom commercial sponsored by a (the?) league against AIDS. I think it was done for a Portuguese market, so there’s some brief nudity that wouldn’t make it past the censors here in the US. I watched it with the sound completely off and “got it” just fine. This commercial demonstrates the benefits of a condom 3-pack versus 6-pack versus 12 pack.

Edit: I removed the embedded video and am changing it to this link because even the first frame of the video is a bit…provocative for a work setting, and I don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t visit my blog for fear of having something inappropriate show up on the screen.

Stepping back a moment, I suppose in all fairness Lucasfilm is in a no-win situation. They could either stand by their Han-shot-second revisionist version of the original Star Wars trilogy, or they could go back on their word and re-release the trilogy as originally shot. Well, let’s analyze this for a moment. Which option would get them more money? Thus, they are giving into fan demands and re-releasing 2-disc sets of each movie with both the new and old versions in each set. The fanboy in me thinks that’s actually pretty cool. The cynical adult, far removed from the kindergartner who first sat spellbound in a darkened theater watching robots and aliens duking it out, cringes at the idea of yet another edition of the movies.

In advertising news, I bring you two funny commercials. One is a car commercial found courtesy of Jeff, the other is a lottery commercial found on Advertising for Peanuts.

After my marathon tv watching I’ve found that I’m kinda burnt out. I find myself reaching for a book, instead. It may be another day or two before I watch more 24.
