Pure greatness. You ought to also search for Buddy Rich on the Muppet Show. He did a drum battle with Animal that’s pretty darn good. No, really.
The superlative Neil Peart has always said that Buddy Rich was his single biggest influence. You can really see that if you listen to Neil’s solos on any of the Rush live albums. You can even see the techniques Neil uses are ripped from Buddy, especially the cross-hand 32nd note rolls across the toms. In fact, the latest tour had Neil sampling some of Buddy’s orchestra recordings into his solo.
If you can find any of the BURNING FOR BUDDY stuff on Youtube’s it’s worth watching as well. This was a tribute album neil put together in honor of the late Buddy Rich, featuring some of rock’s best drummers, doing Buddy Rich big-band stuff.
Thanks, that was thoroughly enjoyable.
