The other day I visited a blog by a security director for Microsoft and was struck by the comments left by “haters”. Why would you go to a website by a Microsoft guy if you don’t like Microsoft? Furthermore, why would you feel the need to leave hateful comments? Honestly, if I were in his position I would have been tempted to remove some of those comments.
That led me to the idea for a new Wordpress plugin. I call it the WP-Jack@ss plugin. I would start by commissioning some artwork for a goofy-looking donkey. The plugin itself would integrate with the comment moderation queue. The administrator would be able to click a check-box next to spiteful, pointless, or just plain stupid comments, and that particular comment would be stamped with the jackass icon.
I’ll admit it’s not a perfect system. I realize that my plugin would probably discourage some people from commenting for fear of being wrongfully labled. Or rightfully. Fortunately, I don’t need to build such a plugin because at Flametoad I’ve never had a comment deserving of the stamp. (Yes, I’m fully aware that I’ve just thrown down the gauntlet. Try to exercise restraint.)
