Over the last week I’ve taken time out of my usual 12 to Midnight schedule to get caught up on Netflix movies that have been gathering dust on my entertainment center.
Last week I watched I am Legend. This was better than I’d expected, and I didn’t feel the letdown that most people reported 3/4 of the way into the movie. In my mind, I’d built up one kind of turn of events but the movie went in a different direction. I loved how we got to see the frayed edges of Will Smith’s sanity.
Monday night I watched The Mist. Woah. I’m a horror movie fan, and I really liked the novella that this story is based upon. That being said, less than ten minutes into the movie and I was cringing at the acting. I mean, it was like made-for-sci-fi-channel stuff. That being said, I bravely persevered and was rewarded with some pretty cool creature designs. Some of the CGI was pretty bad, but the creatures themselves were cool. I liked the acidic webbing. Throughout the whole grocery store stay I kept thinking, this is not how it would go down here in Texas! One more than one occasion I shouted at the tv screen because everyone was being such a dolt. The ending was a downer. It reminded me of a passage from the book World War Z that talked about the same kind of outcome.

Yeah, but the book was just phenomemal. The movie was pretty disappointing. Smith’s a great actor, but the CGI was absolute crap. As usual.
The original’s still the best: watch THE OMEGA MAN. Based on the same book. Better actor, scarier, closer to the real plot.
