I finally had a chance to finish watching Fido over the weekend. The best summary of this movie I can give is Night of the Living Dead meets Lassie.
I thought it was absolutely brilliant. The paper-thin– a zombie outbreak in an idyllic 1950s (that never was) small-town community–doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny. However, the premise is played with such syrupy innocence straight from The Andy Griffith Show that the plot is almost secondary to taking in such a weird juxtoposition of zombies and Americana. I found watching Carrie-Ann Moss toss coy glaces at Billy Connolly somewhat disturbing at first, but as the movie progresses you realize that even though undead Fido has more life than Mr. Robinson.
I noticed that Fido was directed by one of the writers, and I see this as a good example of what happens when a writer’s vision is allowed to carry through all the way to the screen without dilution by countless rewrites by studio executives. Add this one to your Netflix queue.
Incidentally, I just Chuck’s short review of a TV show called Breaking Bad. I’d never heard of this one, but it definitely has my interest. I recommend checking out the review for yourself.
