A week ago, Neal Gorman wrote about what he felt made for successful web designers. He said,
The best web designers do need to have good skills when it comes to code, but that is not the only thing that makes them a success. [Emphasis his.] Their people skills –their ability to communicate with clients, anticipate their client’s needs, put their clients at ease, and most importantly their ability to get clients to UNDERSTAND the web– is what brings a web designer the most success.
This struck me again as a fundamental truth. A little more than a year ago, I wrote a post called Advice Worth Taking, in which I’m inspired by a Scott Adams article to talk about how strong communication skills could elevate a person in the IT field. The same is true for just about anyone, however. Strong written and verbal communication skills will serve you well in almost any career. Whether you’re a lawyer, an accountant, a web designer, or an engineer, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively puts you ahead of everyone who can’t.
It also helps immeasurably in marriage.
