Last week the family and I packed up and drove several hours to Port Aransas, Texas for a few days at the beach. Unfortunately, Hurricane Dolly had something to say about the matter and our vacation plans were put to the test. We arrived on Monday, spent a wonderful afternoon and evening at the beach and our (rented) condo’s pool. That night we watched the news channels talk about the hurricane’s path and what we could expect further north. The hurricane wasn’t predicted to hit Port Aransas, but we would be due for rain and rough waves.
The next morning, fueled by eggs, bacon, and toast cooked in our condo’s kitchen, we once again hit the beach. While the weather was still beautiful, the ocean told a different story. The seaweed was more abundant than I’d ever seen before, and the waves were becomming more choppy. The kids didn’t want to play in the surf, but were still content to dig in the sand. Knowing what was in store later that evening, Mrs. Flametoad and I made the command decision to move inland. We checked out at lunch, drove several hours inland, and spent the evening at Schlitterbahn water park.
From there we drove to my parent’s ranch, where we spent the night, visited a few hours in the morning, and headed home. It would have been nice to have had one day during the vacation when we weren’t driving. I know it was rough on the kids and it hadn’t been our original plan. However, we knew that rain was coming and we didn’t know what it would be like getting off the island on the ferry Wednesday morning as the hurricane made landfall further south. We made the right decision to leave; it just resulted in extra wear and tear from unplanned travel.
All photos were taken with my trusty old Canon G2, bought five years ago when it wasn’t even a new model then.
