This past week we found out that our furnace has finally croaked. It doesn’t come as any great surprise. The thing is almost 20 years old, so we’ve had it inspected every Fall prior to cranking it up just to make sure no cracks had formed. Unfortunately, this year the answer was affirmative and even verified by a second company. Of course, the A/C isn’t new either (although it has been replaced more recently than the furnace), and it’s cheaper to replace both at the same time than just one. So we’re looking at something around $4-6K probably. We got one quote and we’re waiting on another. Fortunately we live in Texas, so we still might not need it for another month or more.
Still, a $5K hit isn’t very welcome right now. That delays our plans for some home remodling and takes a new vehicle off the table for the time being. Ed and I were lamenting on the economy the other day. We both make much more than we did 10 years ago, yet have less disposable income. Okay, some of that has to do with having kids. But even so, our buying power sure seems to have decreased over the last decade. It has been a slow build, but high gas prices and food costs are definitely putting a squeeze on family resources. The Flametoad clan is making it for now, but I’d appreciate your prayers that nothing else breaks.
