Contract with the Electorate

Posted Sunday, October 12th, 2008 at 5:55 am

Can I even begin to explain how tired I am of this election? How tired I was of the last election? And the one before that? I’ve come up with a list of what I want to see from candidates before I engage in another election. I call it the Contract with the Electorate. As far as I’m concerned, anyone running for office should have to sign it before campaigning.

1. My campaign will focus on distinguishing my platform; my beliefs, my strategy upon being elected, my goals for the country. My campaign will not focus on the character of my opponent, and will only dwell upon my own character insomuch as to establish my qualities as a leader.

2. I will not endorse campaign advertising that attempts to create guilt by association with regard to past associates or supporters. A politician doesn’t pick his supporters, they pick him (or her). This type of campaigning is not only bad sportsmanship, but it shifts the campaign away from the issues that are truly important. See #1.

3. I recognize that If elected I serve all the electorate, including the people who vote for my opponent. Consquently, my campaign will treat the supporters of my opponent with the respect due my potential future employer. It is one thing to vehemently disagree on matters of policy. It is another to resort to name-calling, insults, or innuendo.

About Flametoad

Flametoad is the personal website for Preston DuBose, a full-time e-commerce and credit card security professional for the higher-education market, a part-time RPG publisher, and a full-time husband and father.

I ignore conventional blogging wisdom and refuse to focus on a single topic. This website covers gaming, family life, marketing, security, literature, music, and just about anything else shiny that catches my eye.

Do you think I might be your long lost nephew, to whom you'd like to bequeath your vast financial empire? Find my e-mail address and read more of my bio on the About Flametoad page.

I get a small thrill every time someone bothers to respond to one of my posts. I get a big thrill when you post naked pictures of yourself. Well, not YOU.
