Hopefully many of you are already familiar with Child’s Play, the charity founded by Penny Arcade creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins. If not, the idea is to get games into the hands of patients at children’s hospitals. These kids endure terrible illnesses and sometimes painful operations, followed by living for weeks or months (or sometimes years) in a hospital. The donation of a new book or game can be the catalyst for much-needed joy into their difficult lives. I’ve given to this charity in the past and I’m sure I’ll do so again.
Cause is reading from the same playbook but for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed and other veterans hospitals around the country. Take a look at their Amazon wish list for donations of digital entertainment. The list is made up of movies and games for consoles. I’m disappointed that books and RPGs aren’t on the list, but they are up front that their focus is on digital entertainment. Maybe their reasoning is that a movie can be enjoyed by several people at once. Still, we RPG gamers know that a good campaign can be immersive and entertaining for hours, days, and even months. Maybe I’ll donate one movie and one RPG.
