There’s an excellent article on Ars Technica today on the significance of an FCC ruling in the 1960s related to a little device that could broadcast a telephone signal beyond the range of wires. You may be thinking “cell phone”, but the idea was that an oilman out in the fields far away from a land line could broadcast via radio to a home receiver and through a phone line like a normal call. It was a cool device, and illegal according to the laws of the time. Read how this single FCC ruling on the Carterphone (named after its inventor) paved the way for the telecommunications boom and innovation we have enjoyed for more than 40 years.
