Beware the Skimmer

07.01.08 | Comment?

I’ve written once or twice about my growing awareness of credit card security and the various ways it can break down. One such method is called “skimming”, which involves copying the magnetic stripe data from the back of your card with the intention of creating a clone of your card for later use. If a cashier ever offers to “clean” your card with a little device, politely but firmly refuse and let the manager know. Furthermore, as demonstrated in this video, be aware of your surroundings and the card reading equipment you’re using. If it looks funny, just go somewhere else.
