Useless Mutants

02.25.07 | 2 Comments

Back in Junior High, my best friend and I were avid (if closet) comic book readers. One of our brilliant innovations was the creation (in our minds) of a new comic book called Useless Mutants. We amused ourselves by considering that if mutations that bestowed extraordinary powers were actually random, then for every eyeball laser and skin that turned to steel, there must be many more people with less…flashy powers. I think my personal favorite was the mutant who could build a chair with his eyes closed.

Now, many years later, I see my dream realized.

That has to be a classic.

Slap the cheerleader.
Buy a beer.

My personal favorite was the guy who could turn into a paralyzed 3-toed sloth.

Remember Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency? There was the guy who was unable to keep from repeating everything Dustin Hoffman said at any given moment, from the other side of the world.

Then there was the guy who was receiving yesterday’s stock market reports telepathically.
