Death by Christmas Lights

12.17.07 | 1 Comment

Last year at Christmas time, I outlined the front of my house in icicle lights. I think it came to about 6 strands. Then I had some plain lights outlining a window, and another set of lights lining the driveway. They all ran through an automatic timer, which in turn ran to a single outlet. I knew I was overloading the outlet, but I did it anyway. When I’d go outside to turn off the lights the outlet was warm to the touch. In retrospect, that was pretty damn stupid, and I’m thankful that God watches over idiots and children.

This year I’m using LED lights (and not the icicle variety), which use about 80% less power. I also have a handy guide for figuring out how much stuff I can plug into an outlet before it becomes a fire risk, found via Lifehacker. Even if you don’t hang Christmas lights, this is the kind of thing that will become handy to just about any adult in the western world at some point in their lives. You may as well go ahead and bookmark it now.

Just a little something to think about when putting the LED lights up.

You may have to spend a lot of time outside with a BB gun.
