I’m a recent convert of combat photographer Michael Yon. I’ve written about his dispatches in the past. He recently took a break from reports from within Iraq to talk about the equipment behind combat photography. I’d hazard a guess that this guy–and independent journalist funding his own trips to combat zones–has more guts than any of the network reporters in the field right now. I thought this quote was particularly telling.
People say a long-lens is needed, but the fact is, if you aren’t getting hit in the face with hot brass, and if bullets are not snapping by, you are not close enough. There are times when a long-lens would be better, but those are rare exceptions.
If you don’t already have Michael Yon on your RSS feed, you should.
