A Weekend of Horror

Posted Monday, June 25th, 2007 at 10:41 am

My weekend started an hour early when I received a 4 pm phone call from my friend whose vehicle had broken down. I left work early to rescue his wife and baby from the parking lot while he installed a new battery. Fortunately that didn’t take very long and he joined us at the house in short order. Since they were already at the house, I invited some other friends over for dinner and we just made a night of it. After the kids went to bed, Arkham Horror came out. Friday marked the first time any of us had played the game, and our impromptu dinner caught me before I’d even had a chance to read all the way through the rules. This made for a rather confusing experience, but we all had fun being together and hanging out. Over the weekend as I was thumbing through the rulebook, I discovered the summary on the back page. If any of us had noticed that, it would have made the game go a lot easier! Still, I think everyone had enough fun that we’re willing to try again and I’m confident it’ll go much easier. Well, easy probably isn’t the right word. Let’s say more smoothly.

Our unfinished game broke up at midnight and we all said our farewells. Then it was to bed for as much rest as we could snatch before getting up again at 6 am. Saturday was defensive driving for both myself and Mrs. Flametoad. I’ll spare you the details, other than that it was horror unparalleled by either Arkham Horror or Ghost Rider. I’ll never do that again. If I find myself having to take defensive driving again, I’ll go back to doing it online like last time. I spent the rest of Saturday getting caught up on yard work, which was at least horrible if not horrific.

The last bit of horror in my weekend was my Netflix-delivered Ghost Rider. While it wasn’t a bad movie, I certainly don’t rate it on the same level as such comic book movies as X-Men or Spiderman. It’s more on a Daredevil level. The FX were solid and the action fun, but the plot was 2 dimensional and thus paper thin. Don’t rent this one was high expectations, but as a popcorn movie it delivers on its promise.

Warming up old things:

I’ve purchased Arkham Horror too.
We played our first game this friday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and we won. We had a lot of fun, but we forgot some rules.

Thanks for hinting out this great game!

It’s fun, but I still don’t feel like I know the rules that well. I’d like to play with someone who really knows what they’re doing.
