The Dam Bursts

08.21.06 | 5 Comments

I finished reading the previously mentioned The Coyote Kings and the Space Age Bachelor Pad. From there, I immediately launched into Steven Brust’s latest, Dzur, another in the Vlad Taltos series. Polished that off in about a day. While it wasn’t the best of the series, it was still a fun read. After the fact I went to Brust’s blog and read a bunch of comments from people who also bought it as soon as it came out. I read a lot of reader nitpicks that had gone right over my head when I was reading the book. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose. I’m probably the only person on who reads this blog that finds it mildly interesting that Dzur listed ISBNs in both the 10 digit and new 13 digit formats. Anyway, after finishing Dzur I immediately picked up Michael Stackpole’s A Secret Atlas. I’m only a chapter into this one, but it has been nice to escape into reading again. It helps recharge the batteries, so to speak.

This weekend I also watched V for Vendetta. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Makes me want to go out and find the trade paperback. It was written in a different decade, and my understanding is that the movie’s political overtones were not original to the graphic novel. Yes, you can read today’s politics into the movie, but I think that’s okay. You don’t have to be pro- or anti- the current administration to ask yourself tough questions. Namely, how much are we willing to pay for security? Clearly, we must respond to threats against us. At what point does the response become worse than the threat? How do we identify that point before it’s too late?

Last night I worked on ETU for an hour. I know most of you don’t know what I’m talking about, but that’s okay. Here’s a quick rundown. I’m working on a new RPG campaign book set on a university in our fictional town of Pinebox, Texas. It’s being written for the Savage Worlds system and will be converted to the modern d20 System later. I’m working on the character creation section of the book right now, and this includes struggling over a big, new catalog of Edges (which are like Feats in d20). I’m not a game mechanic, and while I enjoy playing Savage Worlds, I don’t have all the nuances of the system memorized. Thus when I have to create a new Edge, it requires a lot of flipping around in the rulebook to match bits of flavor with balanced mechanics. I finally finished up a 4 Edge series, but I’m still not sure it captures the flavor of the profession. But in the meantime I worked most of the way through another Edge series. Just have to polish the final one in that series, then I’ll have one more combat-oriented series left to go. After that comes the setting-specific flavor I’m looking forward to developing.

I’ve got a location for the ETU sourcebook for you. One of the Modern Dispatches I’ve got cooking, Places of Power Among Us, has a dimensional rift in the basement of the ETU Physics building. I’ll email you the description and relevent material when I get a chance.

That would be cool. Thanks! Don’t rush it. Ed did some work on detailing locations, but that’s further back in the book.

I love V is for Vendetta. Would love to play a game world like that. Speaking of which. I discovered Spycraft. It rocks. And 2.0 is even better.

Fantastic to hear about the Pinebox campaign set…. I’ve been slowly running my players through the Pinebox / 12 to midnight adventures inbetween other DM’s running.

We started out with Weekend Warriors (roughly 50% survival rate), and then went into bloodlines with one of the survivors from Weekend Warriors acting as the “leader” of the group….

We are now either going to start back up with Brainwashed, LastRites, or the new book you folks just put out… (The Name escapes me…) Probably the new book, start a business in pinebox, and we can open with them getting the paperwork for opening a military surplus store….

Awesome! How did things go with Bloodlines? Did they get all the way through it? Did you make any big customizations? Are you running your campaign in d20 or Savage Worlds?

Thanks for checking out my blog. Hope you enjoy yourself here and find things worth reading.
