I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m installing a few new plugins here on the site. The first is Filosofo Enroll Comments, which will automatically notify you via e-mail if someone replies to a post in which you have also replied. It does this by automatically creating user accounts for you on my site. You’ll be able to use the login link (in the bottom right corner) to go into an admin panel and change your settings. Click on the link above to read more on how it works.

The second is an alpha (but supposedly stable) version of Bad Behavior 2.0. Bad Behavior 1.x has been instrumental in stopping 95% of the comment spam on this site. Lately more has been leaking through, so I’m hopeful that this solves the problem altogether–at least for the time being.

Edit: I have also installed a Threaded and Paged Comments Plugin. Among other things, it allows you to reply to specific comments. This is a common feature on LiveJournal and most other blogs and it’s something I’ve been meaning to add here for a while. Although it’s designed for WordPress 1.5, it seems to be working fine for WP 2.x. Additionally, I installed the Notable WordPress plugin. To quote the plugin’s site, “Notable displays a series of icons below each post allowing your readers to easily submit you to many different social bookmarking and networking sites.” To be honest I’ve only heard of a handful of them. Whatever. I’m willing to give it a shot, but if you find them annoying let me know and I’ll see about turning some or all of them off.

Second Edit: I uninstalled the Paged Comments plugin mentioned above because it was screwing up other things and I don’t get so many comments that I need paged comments that desperately. I also tried a different plugin for Subscribe to Comments. I’m not sure it’s quite working the way it’s supposed to (there’s supposed to be a checkbox for choosing subscriptions), but it’s getting there. The Notable plugin doesn’t seem to be displaying anything. Since that was just sort of a whim, I’ll probably disable it for the time being.

Third Edit: Subscribe to Comments is working properly. I wasn’t seeing it because, as the blog owner, I already get e-mail notifications. The plugin knows not to double-subscribe me. I had to log out and view the site as an anonymous viewer.

Please let me know if you experience any problems accessing the site or leaving comments. You can reach me at presto at flametoad.com.

Cool! …buttt the trackback comments now run in reverse (newest to top) which is great when you want to read the latest comments, but sucks when you are trying to read through a “thread” of them since people often banter back and forth or post thoughts based on the last post, etc.

I like to read top down, but that’s just me ;)

Me too. I’ll look into it. I’m sure it’s something fixable.

Test. To make sure I can still comment should the need arise.

If you aren’t already, you should run a 2nd anti-spam plugin as well, one that actually checks the comment contents and such incase BB2 misses any spam.

I suggest Spam Karma 2 personally. With the two installed, no spam will make it onto your blog at all. :)

What neat little devices. I’m starting to think wordpress is the new blogger. I’m actually quite frustrated at the commenting systems available to blogger accounts. The commenting system i use is haloscan which is better than blogger’s but because i don’t donate to them my comments get wiped after a few months.

I need to learn more about these gizmos. After the dust settles and Fire in the Hole is released.
