12 to Midnight, Miscellaneous

A brief update

07.06.06 | 4 Comments

Just to follow up my last post, I finally recovered from the killer stomache flu on Wednesday… right around the time I picked up Tadpole-Too’s cold. It’s like getting jumped by a biker gang then having your wallet stolen by a druken frat boy. Insult to injury.

Speaking of insult, Flametoad has been under a focused comment spam attack over the last several days. I have to say I’m disappointed in Bad Behavior. It went from stopping most of my comment spam to presumably very little. At the attack’s peak last night, I got 52 pieces of comment spam over the course of less than two hours. To stop the flood, I had to disable comments altogether. Once they started getting error pages they must have given up, because I’ve only gotten three since last night. Fortunately, none of you see this because all first-time posters are held in moderation queue. After I’ve personally confirmed your lack of spam-hood, your subsequent posts show up immediately. None of the spam I mentioned ever actually made it onto Flametoad. You’re welcome.

Ever since the changes at my day job, my work has become more demanding. That is unlikely to change in the forseeable future. The downside of this is that I have less time to devote to thinking about 12 to Midnight. As a matter of fact, the combination of angst at work and Tadpole-Too-induced sleep deprivation has left me feeling burned out. I’m finding it hard to muster much energy for all the small details necessary for keeping 12 to Midnight afloat. I’m sure releasing Midnight Tales will be a small boost, but even on that project I’m stuck (creatively speaking) on the cover. It’s all Resistence, and I know it won’t last forever. Sometimes it’s easier to push through than at other times, though.

Still haven’t seen Superman, and Pirates comes out this weekend. I need to try to schedule a date with Mrs. Flametoad.

Heck the Midnight Tales cover could just be total black. A peel of moonlight perhaps illuminating the face of townhall clock ticking at 12 to Midnight.

Might not need an artist for that.

Believe me when I say that I know just how hard it is to run a life with increased work, increased sub-work, and finally, a new little one to make sure your sleep comes in short and potent batches. There are entire months that I have no recollection of after my little guy was born back in summer of 2003 (I think) and when I find material I’ve written or work I did, I can’t help but wonder what got me through. Still, don’t let yourself get too down – to paraphrase a line from Firefly, you’ve done the near impossible, and that makes you mighty.

Thanks for the kind words. I think I hit bottom last week, because this week I’ve felt a lot more motivation and feel myself getting back into the groove. When was your little one born? Tadpole-1 was born July 13 of ’03.

Caleb Weston Hyde came along on July 16, 2003. Happy birthday to yours tomorrow and we’ll be having a celebration this weekend.
