The $1000 Hot Dog (and the $380 cola)

This past weekend, Kim told me about her friend who goes to Gallery Furniture for the free food they serve to shoppers. Since we didn’t have anything else to do, I said “sure”, we loaded up the kid, and went. The hot dog was so-s0, but I had two because I was hungry. I also had a fountain drink. The bill for the “free” food came to $2,381. Not exactly free, was it? Sure they threw in a bedroom suite, but they darn well ought to for that kind of bill!

I’m 33 years old, and for my entire adult life I’ve never had a matching bedroom suit. I’ve never had so much as a headboard, matching or not. So it didn’t take much arm twisting at all when Kim saw a set she really liked. It’s solid wood (not plywood or particle board with veneer) in an attractive Mission style. This is really top quality stuff at a price that is comperable to much lower quality sets. The manufacturer (Keller) closed its doors after more than 100 years of operation, and Gallery Furniture bought out all their inventory at a deep discount. Not to sound too much like a commercial, but at least some of that savings got passed on to us. It’s nice to finally have matching furniture and contemplate getting rid of the old, stained dresser that Kim brought with her when we married. A side benefit is that the new bed seems to be supporting the mattress better. A better supported mattress means a better supported back, which means much less lower back pain than I was experiencing just a few days before.

Since we happened to be in the truck (having dropped off the car to get brake work done), I just backed it up to the loading docks and took home our new furniture on the spot. It took more heavy lifting than we would have liked, but we managed to get all the pieces (which were already assembed with the exception of the bed, of course) inside and set up. Yeah, it was a mighty expensive couple of hot dogs, but the complimentary prize has been top notch.
