12 to Midnight, Games

Rippers

Last night I took a much-needed break from 12 to Midnight. Several days ago I stayed up until midnight working on a banner ad, then a couple of days later our friend over at Dirty Unicorn Games came back with a banner ten times as good looking.

Brainwashed banner ad

I took that as a sign that I should step back and let that professional work his magic. It feels incredibly liberating to let someone else work on graphics-related stuff and know that it’s not only going to turn out okay, but better than I could do it. Even when working with artists I usually feel like I have to keep a close eye on things to make sure that they’re portraying what we really want. The other 12 to Midnight guys are writers–and damn fine ones–but regretably that leaves me as the only one with significant graphics training.

Anyway, the above paragraph ranged far afield from my original intent. Let’s try this again. Last night I took off from 12 to Midnight and focused on creating a character for the new RPG campaign our gaming group is starting tonight. If you’re a d20 guy, you may not have heard of it. It’s the Rippers campaign by Great White Games, and it looks to be a LOT of fun. My biggest problem last night was that I just wasn’t sure which character concept to go with. I don’t know what the other players will be playing, and I want to make sure we have the range of skills we need. So I created three characters. One is a Texas Ranger, one is a doctor, and one is a gadgeteer.

I suspect I’ll end up with either the doctor or gadgeteer, which makes me a little nervous for two reasons. First, when I create a character for roleplaying purposes he usually ends up dead. He can be the coolest character in the world, but when you’re rolling him up you better keep survivability in mind. My second fear is that I’m just not very good in supporting classes. I tend to rush into battle, whether my character is built for it or not. I just have a hard time staying at the back during the action. This campaign may teach me the value in doing so.

This morning I had doctor’s appointment, so I had a little extra time to kill at home after Kim and Ben left. So what did I do? I created a Brainwashed demo. So much for taking a break.
