Long Overdue

06.23.05 | Comment?

Usually when I don’t post here for a while, it’s not because I have nothing to say but because I have too much to say. Things have been mighty busy lately, and they’re likely to stay that way until the end of summer.

For the last two weeks I have been vetting artists. Ed and Jerry were worried that the Skinwalker art wasn’t coming along fast enough, so posted a notice on an art site and proceeded to get bombared with replies. After the first few days I realized I’d need a spreadsheet to keep track of all the submissions, so that’s exactly what I did. Sixty applicants later, I had a short list of artists whom we’d like to work with in the future. Let me tell you, looking at 60 portfolios is exhausting.

Now we’re done and have a few artists ready to start working with us. I’ve already assigned an artist to start on interior art for Brainwashed, and I have another ready to start helping out on Skinwalker. That’s when I ran into my second snag. In re-reading the draft to select artwork scenes, I realized that the adventure is 29 pages long and the appendix is 46 pages long. That’s right–the appendix is longer than the adventure. I certainly have no room to talk when it comes to long appendices, but as art director and layout monkey it makes it more difficult to me to evenly space out the art in the book when more than half of it is appendix. Unfortunately, Jerry is out the rest of this week so I can’t consult him about it until next week. In the meantime two illustrations are done and the next two assigned. I can’t assign the next two until I talk to Jerry, which means I may have jumped the gun on getting another artist on board at all. Despite Ed’s and Jerry’s concerns, I’m pretty sure the interior art is going to be done before it ever finishes the editing phase.

So that whole situation is kinda frustrating. I’m pretty tired of dealing with art and artists, and am ready for some writing. But wait…

Fear Effects layout is done and we expect the cover art by the end of the week. That means we’ll probably be releasing it over the weekend.

Brainwashed has returned to my doorstep for editing. No substantial changes. I think art and layout times will coincide nicely.

Then it’s back to getting a cover artist working on Skinwalker. Something else I need to consult with Jerry about. It seems like we’re spending more money than we’d originally budgeted and I want to make sure we don’t over-reach. We’ve gone six months with only one title being released and now they all seem to be bunching up at once. Gotta work on that next year. We want to release in the spring so we can reap the rewards in the summer.

For now though, I think I’ve earned a few minutes of R&R. The blog can wait.
