I AM the Law!

09.14.05 | 4 Comments

Last night was the second night of our Rippers campaign. I’m playing a Texas Ranger, which is a lot of fun. Our group ran into a pair of bandits in an early random encounter, and that encounter ended up diverting us the rest of the night. “Billy” showed me the badges of other lawmen he’d killed, so we had ourselves a little shootout. Actually, I started by trying to rush him and pistol whip him, but he was tougher than he looked and he shot me at point blank. We shot at each other some more and I dove behind my horse for cover after taking a hit. He did the same, and shot my horse dead. I did the same to his, and it became a protracted battle from behind their carcasses. I hit him a few times, but they were grazing shots. He hit me in return, but mine were starting to look more serious. That’s when my traveling companions decided it was time to step in. My big Indian companion “Win” closed with him and seriously injured him, ending the fight.

Unfortunately, Billy later escaped from jail, killing the local sheriff in the process. As the highest ranking (and perhaps only) lawman in the area, I had no choice but to track him down. After almost two days of hard tracking, we finally caught up with Billy and eight other members of his gang in a little ghost town. This time Horace wasn’t messing around. He used his trusty rifle instead of his pistol, for a much more devestating effect. He dropped three of the nine bandits during the gunfight. The bounty from these killers might even cover our stakes in the poker game they’re holding on the boat to New Orleans, which is our next destination.

At the end of the adventure Horace leveled, and I figured the experience of tracking the bandit made him a bit wiser. He now has a d6 in Smarts instead of a d4. That will come in handy for the Command edge and some of the skills I want to improve.
