Defensive Hiking

Where to begin? Mrs. Flametoad worked again this weekend, leaving me and the tadpole to our own devices. The first real cold front of the year had blown in, making things endurable outside again. Saturday morning we took our first trip to Lick Creek Park and had a wonderful time. Ben loves the outdoors and tromped along the half-mile trail in the lead like a real Boy Scout. We had the entire trail to ourselves. Our surroundings were beautiful and varied. I’m hoping we can make this a weekend habit.

The following day we took a trip to visit Mamaw Flametoad, who is turning 93. Unbeknownst to me, she had spent much of the previous week in the hospital and it was an iffy thing as to whether she’d be able to attend her own party. Yet she did, and it was good to see her. Although her health is failing, her mind is as sharp as ever. Hear-tell, she is in pretty poor health (her heart) and she could go any time. My aunt thinks it’s only 50/50 that she’ll live to see Christmas. That seems pretty pessimistic to me, but then again she spends a lot more time around Mamaw than I do, so who knows? At any rate, I’m definitely glad I took the 2 hour trip to see her on her birthday.

A couple months ago I got a speeding ticket and my time is running out to take my defensive driving class. I’m doing it online through A Sense of Humor Driving, which is nice in that I can do it on my own schedule. I’m 3/5 of the way through it. I’d like to finish the last four modules tonight, but we’ll just have to see. Lost is on, after all!

Speaking of which, am I the only one who hopes that Jack plays with more unstable dynamite? He is seriously getting on my nerves. Locke my be a bit nutty, but Jack is just willfully idiotic. He’s faced with a gun-toting stranger, and he’s bitching at Locke? Who has a gun to his head from said stranger? Um, get with the program and focus on the immediate problem, dude.

Back on topic, defensive driving has meant that I haven’t had as much time to work on 12 to Midnight stuff. The Skinwalker appendices are waiting on me, as is a new derivative product. I did make significant progress on our new website, which uses WordPress as a poor-man’s CMS. There may have been better options, but WordPress is easy enough to install that even I can maintain it. However, I am NOT a programmer and I’m running into some issues with php that I want changed. I may have to spend some time in the WordPress forums later. The template has been a big challenge for me because I’m not as well versed in CSS as I should be, but I’m getting it whipped into shape. Once I get the menu straightened out (which is where the PHP comes in) and a pesky CSS/design problem with the header, then it should be ready for prime-time. I’m *this* close to being done with it, but I feel obligated to work on Skinwalker first.

One of the side benefits of moving is the opportunity to go through all my books. I’ve pulled out several books that were on my shelves but I never actually read. They’re now consolidated in a separate shelf to get to later. The ones I doubt I’ll ever get to are going in a box dedicated to the used book store. One unexpected treasure was a Michael Stackpole book I bought but somehow never read. Of course, with so much else going on right now I don’t really have time to read it, but I have eeked out a few minutes to crack the cover. I’m still in the prologue, but I already like the character. Oh, the book is Once a Hero. Odd. Amazon shows the paperback as being $27?

Jack is wigging out for sure. I’m voting him off the island. Oh its not Survivor?

I love the addition of Michelle Rodriguez. Want her to beat me up and bite me. Sorry.

Is it me, or does the three days of hatch storyline seem to have taken place over a 108 minute period? Last season, each episode seemed to take place over a day or two. Considering about 40 days passed over the course of the first season, at this rate, the second season is going to consist of a long weekend.

Totally. They’ve committed the ultimate gaming sin. They split the party. Rather than flipping among several different perspectives in one episode, we’re getting an episode focused on one or two perspectives during a time frame. Then the next episode focuses on other characters/groups during the same period. It’s starting to feel like we’re not getting anywhere. I guess they’re trying to save money by limiting the big cast’s screen time.

Once A Hero is a pretty good book. I think you will enjoy it.
